This Edwardian Painted Kitchen in Sway was a recent design project for Herbert William. The Mackintosh Edwardian Painted kitchen in hickory and taupe was designed for a small family in Sway, Hampshire. This design is a contemporary take on a traditional-style kitchen, with in-frame effect doors
The new kitchen was part of an extension project and Herbert William Kitchens were involved before the extension was built to help make the most of the extension. If you are planning a building project that incorporates a new kitchen as part of the plans don’t be afraid to get in touch with a kitchen designer early on. In this project we were able to suggest the inclusion of a window above the Shaws Belfast sink.
This light airy space is given warmth by the solid oak worktops and flooring.
The L shaped kitchen was given tall units at each end to make the design symmetrical. The Bosch appliances were integrated to give a consistent look in the open plan space

Alex has wonderful creative instincts, an expert eye for detail and had endless patiences as I debated and tweaked the design until the very last minute. In truth, if we had just gone with her original suggested plan I suspect we would have been just as happy. Everything from the quality of the kitchen to the friendliness and proffessionalism of the team (and their services providers) made a potentially very stressful summer easier than expected. Having approached a few kitchen designers we selected HW because they not only had excellent creative design concepts but were willing to properly work with us in the design process as we wanted to have a strong influence. They even joined us when researching worktops at wholesale suppliers in London. In addition, HW consider the practical implications of the project throughout and influence the proposed design decisions resulting in an efficient delivery. The project did not exceed the original budget. Alice and Lee were professional throughout, as were their wider team who were tidy and accurate (especially the joinery with excellent attention to detail). From start to finish Alice made the whole kitchen design process feel genuinely enjoyable and completely stress-free which, during a full self-build, is no small thing. What a good recommendation. We worked with Alice for over a year from initial design until the final door knob was fitted and the post installation aftercare visit. We had a myriad of revisions and questions prior to the final design and Alice could not have been more helpful, patient and accommodating. The reason we selected her over two other designers was the manner in which she made us question our intent, provided workable solutions for the difficult nature of some parts of our kitchen and understood why we chose an alternative worktop supplier to their normal installer - we chose a very specific coloured piece of granite that they were not able to supply. However, it was their granite in Herbert William’s show kitchen that made us look for a more interesting, textured piece in the first place. Alice's knowledge and vision of what can be achieved was excellent in our opinion. With regard to the installation, we benefitted from an absolute genius of an installer. Every other tradesman involved in our build and kitchen has commented on the quality of Ryan’s workmanship. He is an outstanding joiner and installer. And a really pleasant bloke. We have included a double door larder with shelves, drawers and electricity supply - thoroughly recommend it. And if you have enough stone left over, have the worktop installers fit a cold self in the larder, like a traditional walk-in larder should have. We’re very happy with the quality of all the products. Finally, we chose Miele appliances at Alice’s recommendation. On the whole, we’re delighted with them. If you’re considering Miele, go to the Miele Experience workshops for cooking lessons and to understand the full capability of what you are buying. An oven is so much more than an oven these days! Our one regret is that two of our appliances don’t link to our phones. Before the build, we didn’t view this as a requirement. But when you have something on all the other appliances, it becomes a real gap. The main issue is the dishwasher, where we chose the same model we had previously as a stand alone appliance but now as an integrated washer. It doesn’t display the time left on the programme on the door or floor so the only way of finding out how long is left is to open the door mid wash, which is irritating. But this is not a failure on Herbert William’s part, we didn’t check the spec in sufficient detail. Use Herbert William, in our experience you are likely to be delighted with your new kitchen.
